Name: Melissa Scollard What do you do for work? First and foremost, I am a wife and mother of eight. My vocation as a mother has been the greatest gift in my life. As part of that vocation, I have been blessed to be the primary educator of my children for over 17 years. While homeschooling my children I felt a call to combine my love for gardening with my love of the Catholic faith. In 2022, I launched a website “The Catholic Garden” in conjunction with Instagram to provide inspirational ideas, tutorials, and curriculum for those who aspire to start a Mary Garden at home. What is your favorite part of work? I am currently developing a Mary Garden curriculum for homeschoolers. I find immeasurable joy in writing the lesson plans knowing that children will be using this to grow in their Catholic faith. I also love creating content on Instagram that promotes the beauty of the Church. Favorite way to Evangelize? I believe as Catholic Christians we are called to be "messengers of joy" and can use social media to bring the beauty of our faith to the world. Often we are distracted by outside influences that turn us away from God, especially in the culture. Pope Paul VI said “This world in which we live needs beauty in order not to sink into despair.” Now more than ever it is important to evangelize through social media sharing the beauty, goodness and truth of our faith to counter the ugliness found in society today. Favorite Saint? I am a proud member of the St. Pope John Paul II generation and I credit his Theology of the Body for deeply influencing and blessing my family in many ways! He also beatified another favorite (almost saint) of mine, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. Pier Giorgio’s joy-filled, life giving witness to the faith has been a great inspiration to me. Other fun info: I am married to my best friend of 21 years and we have 8 wonderful children, ages 3-20. We reside in Washington State. I enjoy growing flowers, singing and listening to old standards, watching baseball and traveling around the Pacific Northwest with my family.
