CWP Q&A
Name: Jamie Kohler
Where do you work/What do you do for work?
Last year I retired from 21 years of parish ministry, but I am far from being done sharing God’s love with others. I recently started an apostolate called Women at the Tomb.
The women at the tomb were full of hope and charity, and they radiated the joy of the risen Christ. I strive to be a woman of the risen Christ, and I pray that others have the blessing of the same joy!
My work now mostly consists of directing retreats and formation trainings with an emphasis on building healthy relationships, encountering Christ and His Holy Spirit, giving witness to God’s ever-present manifestation in our lives, and helping others discover how the virtues propel us forward on the spiritual journey.
What is your favorite part of work?
My favorite part of my work is the ah-ha on a participant’s face as they understand something new or discover God’s Word in a new way. To see someone on fire for Christ is the best feeling in the world.
What is your favorite way to evangelize?
My favorite way to evangelize is to help individuals discover their own story and how it intersects with the story of salvation.
I am very excited to be furthering my own training in this area as I study to become a spiritual director through the Avila Institute.
I also volunteer at my parish as a catechist for preschool age children and their parents, mentor with the Fidelis ministry, and tutor 6-12 graders at Regina Caeli Academy.
Favorite Hobbies?
Apart from my apostolate, I love to work in my garden, go hiking, read great classic works, and spend time with my family. I have adult children across the country, and a teenager and two-year-old that keep me young!
Favorite Saints?
Some saints that have influenced my life are St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, Pope St John Paul the Great, and St Theresa Benedicta of the Cross.
Each of them has taught me important lessons for the spiritual journey, including the importance of self-knowledge and a daily examination of my life in virtue, incorporating mental prayer and Lectio Divina into my daily prayer routine, making evangelization a priority in my relationships, the beauty of the theology of the body, and the importance of the feminine genius to the world.
As an example, this morning I was reflecting on John 14: 15-26, and it reminded me that sometimes we only begin to understand what Christ has to reveal to us once we are living it.
It’s in the mystagogy of the experience (reflecting back on what has happened) that the Holy Spirit can open our hearts and minds to the truth that was before us all along.
“Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. “I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you. (John 14: 23-26)
I look forward to meeting all of you and pray this Easter season you have had a beautiful experience of the Resurrection!
